Start With The Basics
Pencil-to-paper is one of the more elemental techniques for any artist or designer. This process of making marks and visualizing ideas is one of the most direct and natural processes, but it is often overlooked. As technology gets better and more efficent, the development and cultivation of imagination is turned over completely to these sophicated machines that often inspire us with their sleek looks or textures, but they are not idea machines.
Designers spend more and more time infront of a screen and less time making connections with the consumer or environment which they are designing for. This is due to the computer's overwhelming ability to render images. But for every positive the computers lacks the intuition and simplification that a simply piece of paper and pencil possess.
The elemental look and feel of my pencil sketches never translate into a computer rendering as well as I hope. Something is lost. This maybe the drawing geek in me, but I respond to the hand made. I appreciate the errors and imperfections of the human process & the minimalist computer translation.
