Music Logotype Exploration & Influences
Logotypes are a very large part of my design portfolio, even before the formal study of design. This series of work was influenced work by a font exploration done by a good friend while in school. Type had been a growing obsession, and seeing someone else pursue their ideas in type had allowed me to explore myself. If it were not for these moments I may have move in other directions.
"A logo has to be more than typing out a name in a font."‘/// MIAD Professor, Phil Belair
My only direction, make more than a typeface. Logos are not just letters. Where is the value when a logo could be reproduced on any desktop publishing program. This is the core difference between a weekend warrior and a real logo designer. Seventies logotypes and typography were primary influence in the development of this group of work.
Drawing each logo out by hand was the hardest part when starting, previously I hadn't spent much time drawing letter forms. This has proved to be the largest aspect of my success throughout my design career. Sketching helps the exploration process by allowing rapid composition development with little commitment. By the time I move to the computer I already have a idea or final sketch to work with. Many designers overlook this sketch process; preferring to "sketch" on the computer because of the finished appearance of their sketches. By skipping this process the development becomes a product of a program, not the designer.
